Want to optimise learning and skills development? Get into the office!

Findings from our latest KM Talent Annual Candidate Survey reveal that the opportunity to gain career development and growth is the number one priority for job seekers.

Salary, job title and working with great people are also key factors but with the majority prioritising skills development and growth, how can you optimise your learning?

Let’s consider both formal learning and informal learning.

Formal learning is in the form of structured training programmes and formal education. This might be a programme offered by your employer, an industry certification or a university qualification.

Informal learning is what you learn while you are working.

At KM Talent we think informal learning is often overlooked. There is a wealth of knowledge to be gained simply by being in the presence of experienced colleagues and stakeholders.

Whether it's absorbing insights during meetings, seeking impromptu advice from a colleague or bumping into a key stakeholder who excitedly tells you about the client or work they have recently won, the office environment offers a fertile ground for continuous learning.

Learning by osmosis is also important. Learning by proxy, or being exposed to someone, can naturally achieve an unconscious assimilation of ideas, knowledge and even technical skills.

The concept is not so different from animals learning from the herd or groups of teenagers all naturally dressing in the same clothing. Simply sitting amongst your colleagues listening to how they tackle projects, explain things on the phone or ask certain types of questions can be hugely beneficial.

In a typical corporate environment you have relatively few stakeholders. In a professional services firm you have the gift of being exposed to a much larger number of stakeholders, providing so many opportunities to learn.

You may prefer working from home to avoid the commute. But if you are committed to learning and developing in your career, prioritise in-person engagement when feasible. Embrace the chance to collaborate, learn, and grow alongside your colleagues and stakeholders.

At KM Talent, we are here to support you through every step of your recruitment journey. Search our current job listings to find the perfect opportunity that matches your skills and aspirations.
